Secondary: Year 10 to Year 12

Teaching & Learning in the Senior Years

The Senior School curriculum is structured to meet the needs of students aiming for Tertiary Entrance as well as those wishing to pursue other post-school pathways. Pathways are also available for Special Needs and Gifted and Talented students. Students in Year 12 can choose from Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) subjects leading to the award of an Overall Position (OP) or choose a vocational-oriented course offered in collaboration with external providers such as TAFE Colleges or other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), leading to a Selection Rank. These external providers vary from studies in Hospitality and Tourism to Childcare and Business.

Students in Year 11 for the new QCE system can choose from QCAA subjects and vocational-orientated courses leading to the award of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

All courses offered in Years 11 and 12 contribute to the award of the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Current Year 12 students choosing the OP pathway study an English and a Mathematics subject plus four electives, chosen from the subjects listed below. Students on a Selection Rank pathway study English and Mathematics plus three elective subjects, as well as their vocational certificate learning area.

Courses in senior years are designed to include 'real-world experiences'. A highlight for Drama students in Year 12, for example, is the major production which they undertake each year at the Powerhouse Theatre Complex. For this production, the students work, for an extended time, with professional actors or playwrights to evolve the script, as well as acting and being responsible for all production aspects of the performances.
