Do you remember the American sitcom, Cheers, with the catchy theme song? The regulars of a Boston Bar would share their lives and experiences with each other and it was a place ‘where everybody knows your name.’
On Monday night best-selling author and trusted parenting guru Rebecca Sparrow was the guest speaker at our Care@Clayfield parent event. Rebecca reminded us why it feels so good when people know our name at our favourite coffee shops and cafes. It’s because a big driver of happiness is when we feel known and belong.
As a small school, Rebecca commented that at Clayfield, we were able to create a place of belonging for our community, and authentically know and value each learner. Rebecca also provided great tips around how our boys and girls can make choices and decisions that will greatly improve their chances of having a positive experience in upper Primary and Secondary School.
Some of her key pieces of advice to tweens/teens included: - When it comes to close friendships, it’s all about QUALITY not quantity - To be friendly to everyone, but that all you need is one genuine friend at school - The importance of recognising and avoiding drama cyclones - To join in – as when you feel part of a community, you feel known!
For those of you who were unable to attend on Monday evening, Rebecca has provided a free code to access her live webinar and course, ‘5 Secrets to School.’ It’s a written version of the presentation she gave. If you have children in Years 4 to 8, I recommend sitting down with them and reading/watching the material together, as Rebecca pitches her messages to your tweens/teens.
During the week Kathryn Searle and I had the pleasure of attending the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) Qld State Conference in Cunnamulla. For those members of our community not familiar with the ICPA, it is voluntary, non-profit, apolitical parent body dedicated to ensuring all geographically isolated children’s educational needs and aspirations are not disadvantaged because of where they live. Not only was this a wonderful opportunity to hear about the issues facing rural and remote communities it also provided the chance to connect with current families and Clayfield College Old Collegians who either live near Cunnamulla and Charleville or were attending the conference.
The QGSSSA Artistic Gymnastics championships were held on Wednesday. Clayfield performed very well and all the students and staff involved should be extremely proud of their achievements. Congratulations to all the girls that competed.

National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) started as the Week of Prayer for Reconciliation in 1993 and was supported by Australia’s major faith communities. In 1996, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first NRW.
I grew up in a rural town where we learned the aboriginal name for a few local sites and for the mountains we could see but we were not taught about the First Nations People, the significance of the land or their rich culture. There was only one aboriginal boy in our school and I did not have much to do with him. I just knew that he had a difficult time at school.
When training to be a teacher, I had the opportunity to learn from some indigenous lecturers who gently helped me to realise how little I valued their culture and history. Upon reflection, I recognised that I was prejudiced and racist. This was difficult to admit to myself. I did not appreciate the effect this had on my attitudes and the apathy this fostered towards the issues faced by aboriginal people. As a Christian, reconciliation had been part of my understanding about how I needed to put things right with individuals in my life when a relationship was fractured, but I had not thought beyond that to the part I could play in collectively building relationships.
I am trying to live following the way of Jesus who showed kindness and acceptance to all people and sought to understand their situations and bring hope and healing into their lives. The theme for NRW this year has been “More than a word – reconciliation takes action” reminding me that we all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part, we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Next term as a College we will celebrate NAIDOC week as a part of our commitment to strengthening respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Rev. Paul Yarrow Chaplain.

Sports Update
All autumn fixtures finished up last week with a number of games being played, especially for our Touch teams. A real highlight of the week was our combined Years 7 and 8 teams who experienced their first win of the season with a 5 – 0 win over IGGS. The girls were elated with their performance and have worked hard all season, culminating in this win. The score lines for all touch teams were a lot closer towards the end of the season, reflecting the improvement we have seen across the latter part of the season. Unfortunately, the three teams finished in the lower half of the ladder. Still, they finished with some of the best gameplay we have seen all season and spirits high, ready to continue to build on this in 2022.
Our Football girls also had some of their best performances in the last few games with the last games for our two Snr A teams versing each other. The game ended in a 0 – 0 draw, neither team wanting to be defeated by the other. It was a great match to watch. Credit goes to the girls and their coaches that the standard of play has improved so much for all. Our Opens team had another win against St Margaret’s, finishing 7th overall; however, our Juniors were beaten. Once again, the season ended with a really high standard of play across all teams, and our girls are already thinking about 2022 and what they can achieve.
QGSSSA Gymnastics – Final wrap-up
The QGSSSA Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) event finally went ahead on Wednesday 2 June, much to the delight of both gymnasts and coaches. Our girls were very well prepared and achieved a number of outstanding results for their teams and individually. It was a super team effort as we had a number of girls injured or not available due to the rescheduling; however, all of our girls adjusted very well to their new levels or teams in a very short time frame which makes our results even more stunning. Well done to every girl who donned the Clayfield QG leotard and competed so well on the day. You were all BRILLIANT! Thank you to Lucy, the QG Gymnastics captain for 2021, for staying around and support the girls and organize their flowers. Also to Bella, who also came in support due to not competing. I know it meant a lot to the girls.
Open Grade -2nd Place
A big thank you also to our Delta coaching staff who jumped straight back into training the girls and prepared them so well for this event in a very short time frame. It was huge team effort on the day as well as across the school as many of our Clayfield Staff and Delta coaching team assisted in Clayfield hosting the event out of Chandler. Thank you to everyone for your part, it was a very smooth and well-run event thanks to each of you. A full run down of our teams and individual performances is shown below along with a few photos that capture some of the moments of the day.

Elite Sporting Program – Sports Specialist Series Monday 31 May was the final Sports Specialist Session for Term 2, a very different experience from the first two sessions. This week the girls explored the broader context of living their life as they listened to Frith discuss her own life journey, where she is now, and what she learned along the way. The four primary areas of exploration were around the concepts of Curiosity, Life gets Messy, Creativity and Gifts that we can give ourselves. The session allowed time towards the end for some self-reflection. The girls selected a stone and thought about their own ‘superpowers,’ what these might be and how to better develop and harness them. It was great to hear what the girls thought, and now their task is to work on this before the following session next term.
Health and Fitness Week Health and Fitness Week at Clayfield College was another great week of fun, movement, music, challenge fruit, and veggie snacks, and of course JUMPING!! The week of fun started Friday morning at Assembly with dancing, singing, and giant glitter-filled beach balls zooming around the Assembly Hall, all initiated by Dr Cousins. The festivities continued as classes jumped in the jumping castles for brain breaks to reignite their focus for lessons 3 to 5, danced, played, and just had fun. The oval during the breaks felt like a carnival. Glitter beach balls were flying overhead, music tunes filling the air, students jumping, squealing, and delighting in the jumping castles. Big thank you to everyone that got involved! It was another special week in the life of the College this year.
