Homework & Assessment
Learning occurs not only in the classroom, but also at home when students are involved in a number of activities which together can be labelled “Homework”. Some homework will be set by the teacher and may include:
- completing work from a lesson;
- working additional examples of topics or skills studied during the day;
- researching and completing assignments; and
- rehearsing oral presentations and music performances.
Other homework is not specifically set on a daily basis but is expected of all students. This includes:
- reading widely in a range of genres;
- keeping informed of current affairs and world events;
- revising work covered during the day’s lessons; and
- studying and preparing for exams.
Students are expected to spend at least the following amount of time each school night on homework:
Year 10 – 2.5 hours
Year 11 – 3 hours
Year 12 – 3.5 hours
Assistance with study techniques is provided through the Personal Development program. The Head of Learning Development and Heads of House are always available for assistance.
Students are assessed by a variety of methods depending on the subject, their developmental stage and the aim of the assessment task. In addition to exams, assessment may include multi-media presentations, research assignments, essays, performances, orals, viva voces and videoed responses. The school has strict policies on late and not submitted work, which are consistent with, and support, the policies of the Queensland Studies Authority.
Results of assessment and indications of a student’s progress are notified to parents in reports, which are issued at the end of each semester. In addition, students receive an interim report at the end of the first term. Parents are contacted at any other time when a student’s progress causes concern. Parent Teacher Night is held in Term 3 for all parents and also in Term 1 for the parents of Year 12 students. By appointment, teachers are available at other times to speak with parents.
